There's a place called Atlaea, a tiny island, alone and forgotten in the middle of an unforgiving ocean, constantly ravaged by deadly storms. The animals who inhabit it have organized themselves into two main tribes; felines and canines. They are not just any old animals though, many of them have been gifted with special powers, and those that are the most powerful rule over the lesser ones. For centuries the tribes have been warring for control over the island and over one another. The battles never end with a clear winner, for the tribes are too evenly matched.
The tribes are organized basically in the same way, most tribe members being referred to as brothers and sisters. The younger animals that are in training are simply called little brothers and little sisters. Each tribe has a leader, who in turn chooses a second to be the leader after their death. The leader can choose a second based on their own criteria, so it can be a descend of theirs or not. The Canine tribe leaders are all in the same bloodline, but the Felines do not follow any pattern at all. The Felines frown upon the leaders having offspring while in power, and the Canines obviously require it.
In general, the different chores and jobs that need to be done to keep the tribes running aren't exactly assigned. At the beginning of the day, the leader will assign who is to do which task, be it hunting, training, paroling borders, or whatever else needs to be done. Of course, certain animals tend to have the same job most days, but not making permanent assignments allows for a lot of flexibility.
